Safety Features, Inc. was started in Daytona Beach, Florida over twenty years ago by David Willman, an aircraft engineer. Dave had purchased a Honda Goldwing which he had a hard time keeping upright as he had lingering weakness from polio when he was a child, and still wore leg braces.

Dave designed the retractable wheels based on landing gear for aircraft. They are controlled by both electronics and hydraulics. The retractable wheels allowed Dave to have the full lean of his motorcycle when the wheels were up, and the stability of a trike when he needed it at stop signs and in slow traffic.

When Dave started riding around the Daytona area with his invention, people stopped him to find out where they could purchase the system to add to their motorcycles. Thus was born Safety Features, Inc. Dave patented the system, then, by customer demand, designed one for the large touring Harleys.

In 2003, Dave became ill and sold the company to Marvin and Jennifer Lorge. The Lorges owned a company that designed and manufactured custom transformers for the OEM market. After thirty years in that business, they sold it to concentrate on developing the full potential of the Safety Features products.

Over the last few years, trikes have emerged as a growing market. Safety Features was getting calls from many dissatisfied trike owners, wondering if the Ghost Wheels or Retract-A-Trike would fit their bikes. Many bikers who purchased trikes didn't realize how much they were giving up of the lean of their bike and were dissatisfied with the handling of the trike.
